What Makes South Africa Special? The Stories Behind Our Heritage Range

What comes to mind when you think of South Africa? Perhaps it is the mountains. The ocean. A braai with family or a cup of rooibos tea. A protea in bloom. Or maybe it is the sound of a hadeda announcing its presence from somewhere nearby at an hour nobody asked it to.

South Africa is made up of thousands of little details. Some are iconic. Others are wonderfully ordinary. And together, they make this place feel like home.

That is what inspired the designs in our Dale Raine South African Heritage Range, which makes the perfect gift.

Table Mountain

For many people, Table Mountain is more than a mountain. It is a landmark that tells you where you are. And somehow can help you navigate around Cape Town so you don’t get lost.

For those of us in Cape Town, seeing it can be part of everyday life. But for someone who has moved away, that familiar shape can bring back an entire collection of memories. It represents a place, home and the city we are lucky enough to call home.

The Protea

The protea is one of those flowers that feels unmistakably South African. Strong, distinctive and beautiful, it has become an enduring symbol of the country. It was the perfect addition to our Heritage Range because it represents the natural beauty and character of South Africa.

Rooibos Tea

Rooibos is another little piece of South African life that has travelled far beyond our borders.

But there is something special about having a cup of rooibos at home.

For many South Africans, it is comfort in a mug. A quiet moment. Something familiar and something that tastes like home.

The Hadedа

And then there is the hadeda.

If you know, you know.

You can be peacefully enjoying your morning when suddenly that unmistakable call echoes through the neighbourhood.

It may not be the quietest bird in the world, but it is certainly one of the sounds that many South Africans recognise instantly.

Sometimes heritage is serious. And sometimes it is a bird screaming outside your window.

The Potjie

A potjie represents more than food.

It represents gathering, family, friends, long afternoons, conversation, a lot of waiting and eventually everyone asking, “Is it ready yet?”

Food has a wonderful way of bringing people together, and the potjie is a beautiful representation of that South African tradition.

South African Taxis

The humble South African taxi is another unmistakable part of our everyday landscape.

Whether you have travelled in one, watched them navigating busy streets or simply recognise them as part of the rhythm of South African cities, they are woven into everyday life.

The Windmill

The South African windmill brings to mind wide-open landscapes, farms, dusty roads, travelling through South Africa and the quieter parts of our country.

It represents a different side of South Africa — the spaces between the cities and the beauty of the landscapes that stretch far beyond them.

A collection of little reminders

When we created the Heritage Range, we didn’t want to simply put a South African flag on a sweater and call it done.

We wanted to celebrate the little things. The things that make someone say, “Oh, that reminds me of home.”

That is what heritage means to us.

It isn’t only about history.

It is about memorie, about people, about places and about the ordinary things that become extraordinary when you are far away from them.

Our Heritage Range is a collection of those little reminders, embroidered onto our much-loved 100% cotton bottle green sweaters.

Because sometimes you don’t need to say where you’re from.

You can simply wear a little piece of home.

Proudly South African. Proudly local. And stitched with meaning.
